Comprehensive, Interdisciplinary Care
Deaconess Pain Management Center services focus on evaluation and treatment of chronic, acute and cancer pain. We accept new patients by referral only.
Evaluation
The first step in our pain management program is a comprehensive evaluation. We will evaluate your medical history to understand your pain in the context of your overall health. Then, we may use a variety of tools to diagnose your pain. For optimal pain control, we need to accurately identify its source. Evaluation may include:
- Medical History & Physical Examination - This will allow the physician to understand your pain in the context of your overall health. The physician will also consider the treatments you've had in the past and whether or not they were helpful to you.
- Referral for Diagnostic Evaluations - Tests may include CT and MRI.
- Diagnostic Nerve Blocks - Sometimes, the physical exam and tests above aren't enough to identify the cause of pain. A diagnostic nerve block allows the physician to test nerves that he believes may be related to the pain. The test involves injecting a small amount of local anesthetic near the nerve to determine if the pain subsides. If the test offers short-term pain relief, it will help the physician choose an effective treatment for longer control.
- Psychological Evaluation - If your physician recommends a psychological evaluation, he's not suggesting that your pain is all in your head. But psychological and emotional issues play a significant role in pain and its management. In some cases, they are the cause of a physical pain. In other cases, long-term pain causes depression and emotional distress. Often it becomes a cycle.

Treatment
After evaluating the cause of your pain, your physician will discuss treatment options. Our goal is to achieve the maximum pain relief possible and facilitate your return to normal life activities. We will work to promote your physical, behavioral & emotional health.
